PSLA Wall of Distinction Criteria
NOMINATING PROCEDURE – To be nominated to the Fowler High School and/or PSLA at Fowler High School Wall of Distinction a candidate/team must meet the following criteria:
- A candidate or team must have ten (10) years of separation from the school,
- A bona fide varsity athlete of Fowler High School and/or PSLA at Fowler High School:
- distinguished individual honors,
- who graduated and/or,
- has been recognized for positive contributions to their respective communities
- distinguished team honors,
- any team winning a New York State Championship,
- any team competing in a New York State Regional playoff,
- any team with a school record number of wins in a season for that sport,
- any team winning a Sectional Championship,
- a team that displayed extraordinary effort, purpose, and camaraderie throughout a season (Note: nominated/endorsed by the head coach)
- A Fowler High School and/or PSLA at Fowler High School student who demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, participated in programs/activities, contributed to the advancement of the school, and meets the following criteria:
- distinguished individual honors,
- who graduated and/or,
- has been recognized for making positive contributions to their respective communities.
- An individual or organization with extensive contributions to Fowler High School and/or PSLA at Fowler High School as a coach or actively participated in community service or volunteer activities directly benefiting students, staff, and programs at the school.
WALL OF DISTINCTION COMMITTEE:
The Wall of Distinction committee shall be comprised of Alumni members. The committee may appoint non-alumni to serve on sub-committees for the purpose of vetting nominations, raising funds to sustain the effort, or promoting the efforts of the committee. The following sub-committees, and any other(s) established by the Wall of Distinction Committee shall be comprised by Alumni.
SUB-COMMITTEES
- Screening Committee – charged with reviewing all nominations and forwarding accepted nominations to the Wall of Distinction Committee
- Finance Committee – charged with conducting fiduciary activities to sustain the Wall of Distinction
- Public Relations Committee – charged with all media and nomination notifications
- Other Committees – as deemed necessary by the Wall of Distinction Committee
NOMINATIONS:
Anyone can nominate an individual or team to the Wall of Distinction. All nominations are to be channeled through the Wall of Distinction Screening Committee which will review the nominees and their qualifications. Recommendations shall then be forwarded to the full Wall of Distinction Committee.
The Wall of Distinction Committee will elect nominees by majority vote. Any nominations that have not been favorably acted upon within a period of three years will need to be re-submitted by whoever submitted the original nomination.
PROCEDURE:
Nominations shall be submitted on forms available from the Syracuse City School District Athletics Office, PSLA at Fowler High School and/or members of the Wall of Distinction Committee and shall contain detailed chronological supportive information outlining the qualifications of the nominee.
The closing date for all nominations and all comments in any calendar year shall be May 1st. The Screening Committee must receive the form on or before this annual date to be included for consideration. All nominations received shall be date stamped when received and acknowledged in writing by the Screening Committee. A copy of the letter of acknowledgement shall be sent to the Wall of Distinction Committee as they are received.

Following the closing date, all nominations shall be formally summarized by the Screening Committee and forwarded to the Wall of Distinction Committee within thirty days. The summarized nominations shall be coded to identify the status of the nominations as current, second or third year. Nominations received are eligible for consideration for three (3) consecutive years and are then considered inactive. To be considered for an additional three (3) year period a nomination must be resubmitted.
All nominations are screened by the Screening Committee who vote on a small maximum of newly honored members to be elected by the Wall of Distinction Committee each year.
SCREENING PROCESS:
All active nominations, current, second and third year are reviewed and recorded. Through discussion, a list is compiled of those individuals to continue in the voting process. All inactive nominations in their second and third year are reviewed. The Wall of Distinction Committee may reinstate any of these nominations to the list of active nominations for further consideration.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Each member of the committee shall be provided with the names of the people on the active and the inactive lists. Also, a summary of everyone’s accomplishment and contribution from the nominating forms and other data that may have been included. The committee shall have the power to establish a quota of candidates to be elected.
METHOD OF SELECTION:
The selection of candidates shall be conducted annually. The selection procedure will be held at an annual Wall of Distinction Committee meeting during the month of May.
RATIFICATION:
The Selection Committee Chair shall present the names of the selected candidates to the full Wall of Distinction Committee for ratification. A majority vote of approval of those in attendance shall be necessary for ratification of the Committee's recommendation. All details of the selections and results are to remain confidential until officially released to the individuals by a letter from the Wall of Distinction Committee within seven days from the vote. The Wall of Distinction Committee should then release the data immediately to the media.
ELECTIONS:
The Wall of Distinction Committee will nominate and elect members to the Wall of Distinction. Each nominee must be elected by a majority vote of the members of the Wall of Distinction Committee present at an annual meeting to be held in May every year.
SITE
The Wall of Distinction shall be housed at an appropriate area within PSLA at Fowler High School.
RECOGNITION:
The election of members to the Wall of Distinction and/or their respective families shall be officially notified in writing by the Wall of Distinction Committee. It shall be announced by news releases and through Syracuse City School District media. The recipient or designated representative shall be presented a Wall of Distinction Commemorative gift. All members of the Wall of Distinction will have their name and the year of their induction displayed on a plaque at PSLA at Fowler High School.
PUBLICATION OF SELECTIONS:
Following ratification, the Wall of Distinction Committee shall be responsible for performing the
following duties:
1. Prepare a brief resume of each successful candidate for the Wall of Distinction Induction
Ceremonies.
2. Notify the successful candidates and their nominators of the selection.
3. Notify the nominators of inactive nominations of the status of their nominations.
4. Advise the successful candidates of details regarding the official induction ceremony and
function as applicable.
- Update the files of all nominations and forward the list to the Wall of Distinction Committee.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
The Wall of Distinction Committee shall be responsible for notifying the Local media and the Syracuse City School District Information Office within thirty days after the Annual Meeting of those who were elected.
FORMAL INDUCTION:
The Wall of Distinction Committee shall be responsible for coordinating with the School Administration to select a date in the Fall (preferably - Homecoming Day). The Chairperson shall notify the person(s) involved and work out what is best for PSLA at Fowler High School. The newly honored members are to be the recipient of a personal Wall of Distinction gift and their names shall be enshrined on a Wall of Distinction plaque to be on display at a designated Wall of Distinction location within PSLA at Fowler High School.
